Hi there,

first time I've posted in a non-excel forum so please excuse my ignorance...

I am editing a document and the author has set up the index page so that if you hover over the page number, the little hand appears and allows you to click on the page number and be taken to the page.

I know he has used bookmarks for this because on some of the parts of the document I deleted, the "Error! Bookmark not defined" message appears on the index.

I have found out how to insert a bookmark but the only way I know to go to the bookmark is via the insert bookmark --> goto method. My question is, how do I link the bookmark to the page number?

Would really appreciate any help

Kind Regards

Hello.

Unfortunately no one can give you a direct answer as they will need more information as there are several ways to do this.

Going by what you've said though, I'm assuming the person who wrote the Word document is using a Word Generated Index Page.

1) You create these tables via the menu: Insert/Reference/Index and Tables. This is relatively easy to fix. Put your cursor within the generated table and press F9. Choose to update the whole table. On a Word generated Table of Contents/Index page, the reference are already linked to the respective positions in the document (means you can double click to get word to go to that position in the document.

These tables are generated based on Styles. So if you update the table and your reference DOESN'T come up, go back to the place in question and make sure it's formatted with the correct style.

2) If the person manually did this, then the two most common ways to do this is:

a) Use the Page Ref field code. Looks something like this: { pageref [bookmark goes here] \h \* Mergeformat }

You can get to this by menu: Insert/Field. Choose the category Links and References. Choose field name PAGEREF. Click your bookmark where indicated, and make sure Hyperlink to Paragraph is indicated.

b) Insert text indicating the page number. Highlight the page number. Choose menu: Insert/Hyperlink. Indicate the bookmark.

Hope this puts you in the right direction.

:)
