With a helper column (which could behidden) and assuming a header row:
F1 houses a 1. F2 formula copied down. Select A2:Exx and apply the CF shown.




Without a helper column (but considerably more 'processing power' required)

Does it matter if it's the first group highlighted or the second? You could use this formula. The last group will always be highlighted and then it works back from there.......

=MOD(SUM((A1:A100<>A2:A101)+0),2)
