When creating a custom Excel PivotTable Style there is an option to "Set as default PivotTable quick style for this document". If it is not set as default then it is still saved within the workbook and available through the "PivotTable Styles" Ribbon Control in the context "Design" ribbon tab.

But custom styles only seem to be saved within a workbook. Is it possible to make them available at the application level (i.e. always available)?

No, I don't think there is any way to save the pivot table styles at the application level so they can be used by any workbooks.

The Contextures site suggests a workaround.

One further step might be to save your favorite customs style(s) in a template file, then use a macro to Open the template file and do the copy-paste-delete steps in the suggested workaround.
