I amaze myself how I can type a post, get ready to hit submit and then BAM, I work out the answer on my own!

I guess sometimes all it takes is to ask the question that gets your mind going.. Thanks to all the gurus here on the forum! When I can't solve it you guys are awesome.

Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
What I think is happening is that when you decide to ask for help it means that you have to explain the problem. Going through this process often makes you more explicit, and you don't make the implicit assumptions you made before. With tis objective view, you see the problem clearer, and often see the solution.
 
Much of the time the greatest challenge is to define the actual problem or root cause and avoid misdiagnosing the symptoms as the problem.

Good lesson in this thread.
