Workbook Header/Footer

I feel a bit silly asking and assume I am missing something but I applied a header and footer to my Excel workbook and saved the document when I opened it again both were gone. I checked print preview and they did not show up there and also under view selected page layout that shows an empty header and footer. I have tried multiple times on different computers tried saving as and replacing the file. I have never had this issue before and am just not sure what I have done wrong. Any suggestions?
