Word Updating TOC in Locked Form

I have a document that has fields that I need updated. So I used fields for this which "calculate on exit" to update accordingly. However, the Table of Contents that is in the document updates with "Error" ... I don't want the Table of Contents to update while the rest of the document updates the fields.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Thank you for any help you can provide.

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
Hi PrinceNeptune,

It's unusual for a Word form to need an updatable TOC. If that's so in your case, you could either lock it (Ctrl-F11) - Ctrl-Shift-F11 unlocks - or convert it to plain text.

If neither of those options is suitable, post back.

Hi Macropod,

I don't necessarily want the TOC to update. However, the entire template is updating with the "calculate on exit" fields that you had helped me with before. However, in this process, the TOC that is there updates as well.

I don't want it to update, it just happens to be doing so amongst the other updates.

Is there a way that I can tell if something is locked or not? I have tried ctrl-f11, however there is no indication that this has done anything.

Thank you for all of your help.

Hi PrinceNeptune,

I can't see why the TOC would update, unless:
. you're changing the pagination as a result of the formfield entries and the updates to whatever they're linked to ; or
. there's a formfield or cross-reference in a heading referenced by the TOC.
In either case, selecting the TOC and locking it before protecting the document for forms should prevent the updates.

Cheers
