THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!

FYI, my working environment is: Word 2000 on Windows 2000, service pack 4

I can't get the numbering in my TOC to reset after each main section. This is what i'm getting:

I. ------
II. ------
III. ------
A. ------
B. ------
C. ------
IV. ------
D. ------
E. ------
1. ------
2. ------
F. ------
G. ------
V. ------
H. ------
I. ------
VI. ------
I should add that yes, I know I can go in after-the-fact and manually reset them but every time I update the table, the formatting gets reset to this stupid continuous format. I have the 2nd level style set to reset after it encounters a first level, but it seems to be ignoring this! Is there a way to force a reset?

Excel Facts

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
Nope, not impossible.

I'd hazard a guess that it's a problem with the numbering in the second level style.

You don't fix it on the TOC page. You fix it in the style of what is your second level bullets on the TOC page.

lol. Did I confuse you?

Okay, goto the place in the text where "D. blah blah blah" is.

Choose menu choice Format/Bullets and Numbering. Chances are you have "Continue from Previous List" or some such checked off. Choose restart numbering or some such.

That'll fix it for that particular paragraph, but what you actually want to do is find out what the style is, and choose menu Format/Styles and then modify that style to restart numbering.

Yes, GWkenny... I have it set in the styles. The problem is, the 2nd level in the outline TOC isn't really an "official" bullet or number on that page. It's just a normal text header. I only wanted certain text headers to appear in the TOC so I copied a text header style and named it _toc2 and applied it on that page. Then in the TOC Options I set _toc2 style to be the 2nd level.

I went to the INSERT > INDEX & TABLES > MODIFY button. In there, I modify the TOC2 and click the FORMAT > NUMBERING > CUSTOMIZE and it says it's set to "Restart numbering after Level 1" if you click the MORE button.

Isn't this the proper way to set it up? Or does the actual text in the document have to be formatted as a bullet or number?

[EDIT:]
I just tried your suggestion and it works. STRANGE! I assumed since they had the option in the TOC parameters it would work as expected. I guess not. Perhaps they fixed this bug in future versions, but I'm stuck with Word 2000 at work. :(
