Good Morning,

I am using Word 2007 on a Windows 7 machine.

I want a numbered list of the following:

1.1
1.2
2.1
2.2
2.3
3.1
3.2
4.1
4.2

I've been struggling with the "Define New Number Format" for 30 minutes now, and I'm out of ideas. I'm having trouble making the "2.1" Whenever I alter it, using either the "Define New Number Format" or "Set Numbering Value" it changes the above value, the value already at "1.2" I've even tried to insert a continuous section break in between those two numbers but that doesn't make a difference.

Is there anyway to accomplish what I'm trying to do? I would like a list format, rather than just having the numbers as part of the text.

Let me know if additional details would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
Hi Chris,

Click on the 'Multi-level list number button and choose the option that shows:
1
1.1
1.1.1
etc.

This will create aparagraph numbered '1'. type anything in that paragraph, press Enter then the tab key and you'll have a paragraph numbered 1.1. type anything in that paragraph and press Enter and you'll get paragraph 1.2. To get back to level '2', click on the 'Decrease Indent' button. Type some text, press Enter, then tab and you'll now have paragraph 2.1.

The point to remember is that there must always be a paragraph with a parent-level number before you can begin inputting paragraphs at the corresponding child-levels. So you need to have something along the lines of:
1
1.1
1.2
2
2.1
2.2
etc

Yes, this multi-level list does the trick.

The difficulty I'm having is that these numbers were given to me, and the individual doesn't want any "child levels." It sounds like the exact configuration isn't possible in a Word list.

Hi Chris,

Actually, it seems to me that what you want are the child levels without their parents. The problem with that is that there would be no logical way for Word to tell when a new 'parent-level' is required (eg to go from 1.3 to 2.1).

What you could do, though, is to format the parent paragraphs as hidden and make sure the two 'hidden text' options under Word Options|Display are not checked. Toggling the Show/Hide symbol on the toolbar will then allow you to show or hide the hidden paragraphs as you type and, visible or not, they won't print.
