Michael sends in a great tip today about pivot tables. While Excel 2007 replaced the drag and drop feature with drop zones, there is an obscure setting in Excel 2007 that will let you go back to the old drag and drop method. Episode 1058 shows you how.

Hey alright, welcome back to MrExcel netcast, I'm Bill Jelen, it's been a while since we've talked about pivot tables. Let's create a quick pivot table here in Excel 2007, insert pivot table and one of the things in 2007; it's kind of easier to build pivot tables because you're simply dragging fields around these drop zones over here, so it's kind of obvious you know what you're building as you drag the fields around you get a nice concise summary report over there on the left-hand side, now the problem with people who have been using pivot tables for a long time is they miss the fact that we used to be able to just drag fields and drop them on the report, and I got a nice note today from Michael who said; you know hey if you really like to drop fields on the report there is a way that you can still do that in Excel 2007, now what we want to do is go into the pivot table options, now there's five tabs now we want to go back to the third tab; the display tab where this is a setting here called classic pivot table layout.
Click OK, and now we have drop zones or you can simply drag the field and drop it in the appropriate spot just like we could do in Excel 2003, so I want to thank Mike for that great tip about the classic mode for those of you or old-time pivot table fans you'd rather drag and drop, great way to go if you're new to pivot tables then go ahead and just learn how to use the drop zones over here much easier you're not going to drop a field in the wrong place.
All right I want to thank you for stopping by; we'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
