why excel multiple a number by 100 before adding %

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
Hi,
The mathematical calculation of percentage is as follows fr ex 25% . 25/100 *100=25%. So the value stored by excel is always between 0 and 1 in my example it would be 0.25. If you had cell formatted to general you woukd get 0.25. Then when you cange formatting to percentage excel formats the value to percentage multiplying it by 100 and you get 25% percentage as a result. If you change back to general you will have 0.25 again. Remember, percentage is always a part of 1, 1 is 100%.

Sebastian

One more thing. The percentage formatting is only for viewing to the user only, whilsy in background excel keeps value not muliplied by 100 ex.
25%
Excel stores value 0.25 wheras formatting to % views 25% but the value in background is 0.25

Thanks for your reply. In your example you entered 25 in excel right?
Then excel will multiple by 100 then adding %. So the result will be 2500%

I did not understand in your example why you did 25/100*100, what would that do?
I see the division will cancel the multiplication and then adding % to the result

Thank you very much

25% is the same as 0.25 which is the same as 25/100
