Weird GETPIVOTDATA error

Until today I have had no problem getting data out of a pivot table into another sheet by just clicking = and then in the cell of the pivot table. this gives me the GETPIVOTDATA formula with the external sheet reference.

Today I have the odd situation of being able to do this from some sheets in my pivot table work book, but not from others. I click in the output sheet, press = and then click on the pivot table then it seems to select the sheet instead of the pivot cell. I click again on the cell and get the error "cannot enter a formula for an itme or field name in a pivot table report". If I build the GETPIVOTDATA formula long hand in the external sheet it gets the data no problem.

If I turn off "generate pivotdata" on the options I get the same thing. So I put = on target sheet and click on G50. I see =G50 on my output sheet, but the pivot sheet seems to be active so it thinks I'm trying to out =G50 in the pivot table.

Cant think what I might have done to create this behaviour on only some sheets so any advice appreciated.

Mike
