morning all,

fairly new to excel and trying to stream line a way we do stocktake

we currently have a variety of silo sizes with a variety of powers from 70 tonnes to 105 tonnes

is there a way i can create a formula to automatically calculate the tonnage once we dip the silo and measure how far down the power is

if i know 1m from the top of the silo is 105t and lets say 12m is 0t can it calculate the measurement in between

say like 2m from the top is 85 tonnes, 2.5m down is 78 tonnes , 5m is 52 tonnes

cheers
Scott

Those measurements in your example suggest an irregular relationship between Meters and Tonnes.

One approach you might take is make an x-y scatter plot of known measurements for a particular Silo shape/size. Real measurements will hopefully give an easy straight line or curve on a graph. If this gives a straight line you can apply a "Y=MX+B" formula, or if it gives a curve you can test different curved trendlines and play with the orders of magnitude, then use that formula if you get one that fits.

This looks like you have 9545.454545 kgms per metre depth.

This is 95.45454545 kgms per centimetre.

So just subtract the length of the dip in cms from 1200 and multiply by the 95.45454545.

A 1 metre dip give you 11 metres of fill. 11 metre * 95.45454545 = 105,000 kgms or 105 tonnes as you state.

assuming you put the measurement in A1, try.....

Code:
=IF(A1=12,0,105/A1*10)
