Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
Most likely because the criteria is not found in column A. With vlookup, the criteria must be in the left hand column, for anything else you need index and match

=INDEX($A$1:$A$1404,MATCH(E1,$C$1:$C$1404,FALSE))
