Hi all, if there is an existing thread that solves this, please let me know and I will check it out. I haven't seen one yet...

I have a table. I am using VLOOKUP. The table is 4 rows by 6 columns. Small. VLOOKUP works well for the first 2 x rows but not the next 2 x rows. It just gives an N/A answer. I have deleted and rebuilt the formulae several times. Clearly I'm repeating what I have already done as the outcome is the same. This makes no sense to me that a simple formula would work for some but not others. And I tested the LOOKUP cell with XLOOKUP and it worked. Just not with VLOOKUP. Could Excel be unreliable in this way?!? Or have I made an error that I haven't picked up on yet? FYI I have checked the formatting and it's all set to General or Numbers.

Screenshots below show it working and not working.

Any help greatly appreciated!

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
Hi & welcome to MrExcel.
You need to put 0 (or FALSE) as the final argument in the vlookup.

Solution
Without the final argument it does an approximate match & for that to work, the data must be sorted A to Z
