I only touch this when I do some basic editing of macros I have recorded. Can anybody suggest the best method or place to get some basic knowledge of VBA that a complete beginner can understand?

If I were you I'd get the bigger Walkenbach book. It's very readable. You may find that the Dummies book doesn't cover bits you need to know.
