I received a xlsm file from unknown source, Is there a way i can verify whether its safe or sent by a hacker who may want to infiltrate my PC,
its downloaded on my PC, but i haven't opened it.
It may be against rules to post the same here, is there a safe space to go to verify whether its safe or malicious ?

Excel Facts

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.
If you received an unknown file from an unknown source, why would you want to download or open it?
I would assume it is malicious and delete all traces of it immediately.
It is most people's policy to never open files with code from unknown sources that you were not expecting!

Thanks. Looks like I'll never know whether it was safe or malicious. How would downloading it make my PC vulnerable without opening it after all vba has been blocked?

It could be masquerading as an xl file, but be something different.

In addition to what Fluff says, even if it had been downloaded without running the code, would you want a file with malicious code found anywhere on your computer?
There is still the potential that at some point in the future someone could accidentally enable it.
Just safer to get rid it off your computer altogether.

Also, I don't know if this is a personal computer or a work computer, but if a virus scan finds that you have a malicious file on your computer, that might not look too good for you in your workplace.
My workplace has a strict policy about downloading files, and any violations may lead to disciplinary actions.

Its actually a work computer. I'll delete it and call it a day

The other option is could be your IT dept doing a security test to see what you do with the file (which again means delete it)

Reach out to the Administrators of that forum and have them research it.
We actually have policies against users reaching out for help and/or harassing others via DM.
If that forum has a similar policy, they can deal with that guy.
