Hi, I would like to know if anyone of you would be kind enough to tell me what is the difference between VBA application and VBA.net? All I want to know is to learn VBA to improve in writting programs in excel using VBA. Can anyone tell me which class I should take? Anywhere I look, they are teaching VBA.net, not application. Is there a big difference, or for my purpose, do I need VBA.net? I am a chemist, using spreadsheets and charts and etc. I do not care for Net using at this point. All I want to do is to automate my current excel charting and editing and trouble shooting which I think knowing VBA will be of alot of help. :help: :help:

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
Hi,

There is no VBA.NET only VB.NET. Sorry for being picky but it's an important distinction.

Anyway, VB.NET is a development language which amongst other things allows you to create full blown applications that are stand alone. VBA is an embedded language i.e. it runs within a container such as Excel, Access, Word and so on.

To answer your question, if you want to automate Excel, you need an Excel VBA class or tutorial. VBA is going to be around for a long time yet so I'm sure there are courses somewhere.

Dan

Thank you so much for your reply,
I never had a programming class before, and I am afraid if I jump into VB.net, I will be over whelmed and my real objective which is trouble shoot in excel will be left to a side. So like you said, I probably need an Excel VBA class which I took for two days, but I feel like I need like a semester of it so I can practice and learn better. Do you know of any city in Bay Area, CA that teaches it. I have been looking on internet, and was not successful.
I know you live all the way there, in Australia (nice and warm now), but do you know of how I can search for these kind of classes that is at least a semester long. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I need a suggestion from anyone about Visual Basics. I need to sharpen my skills in Ecel, using visual basics. I am intimidated with VB.net, (there is no longer offered just VBA), therefore, would it be helpful if I take VB.net to help me with my excel problem solving?, since I never had a programming class. Please some one help.

Welcome to the Board!

Other than the tips and tricks that you can pick up here, a Google search for "Excel VBA Tutorials" will turn up quite a bit.

If you're up for a small fee, then www.vbaexpress.com has a great training/certification program.

I'll be honest and say that I'm wary of doing courses in programming. The problem is that unless you start practicing immediately after the course then you soon forget what you've learnt. Several of my colleagues have been on expensive courses and know next to nothing. This is because they never practised and started to use the language once they got back to the office.

As Smitty mentioned, there are a whole bunch of VBA tutorials available and you can learn a lot from them - you can go through them at your own pace and digest the material. I have a couple of basic tutorials here but they will only get you a little way.

The other way to learn is to jump in and try and automate what you've got now. Use the macro recorder, experiment with changing the code, ask questions in the forum and most importantly, ENJOY!

Dan
