Using Sum Offset

I am trying to use Sum Offset to sum a range based on the "offset target value" of cell L4 which is "20" for example.

=SUM(OFFSET(M$9,0,$L$4))

However this doesnt work. Basically I would like to sum 20 columns from M$9 starting position.

=SUM(M$9:OFFSET(M$9,0,$L$4))
