I am wanting to achieve a countif which will refer to a different cell to decide which column to count.

Example:
I have data in 8 different Columns, labelled 1-8. I want to count the pieces of information in each column using countifs, however this will depend on the value in A1. (i.e. if I type 1 in A1 I want to to count column 1, if I type 2 it will count Column 2 etc etc.

Is there a way I can achieve this without a very long multiple IF formula?

Thanks
Dan

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
Something like this. It doesnt rely on the headers. If you type 3 in A1 it will use the 3rd column in the range. A2 houses the criteria.

=COUNTIF(INDEX($D:$K,,$A$1),$A$2)
