use query result as variable

Hi, I have the following code that works just fine, it counts the records on one table

If DCount("*", "[tbl_analytes]") = Vcount Then

I would like to compare this number to a query that I run that returns the last value of a particular field on another table (which I want to be the vcount) and check to see if they are equal. I am struggling with how to retrieve the query result and use it as a variable.
Any help is appreciated as always.

I got it to work using dlast

Vcount = DLast("mod_count", "tbl_version")
