Use Excel to scan barcodes

I know that i can generate barcodes using the font; however, if i purchase a barcode reader is there a way to make it so that any employee(if i give each employee their own barcode) can sign out tools ( also using a barcode) and then sign them back in when done? I am basically wanting to create a tracking software using excel if it is possible.
