I've made the following expression as criteria for a query:

=[Enter Location to search for:] Or LCase([Enter Location to search for:])

But I would like to be able to allow the user to enter a parameter value, which doesnt have to be exact - in other words is there a function that allows you to take a string and search for the presence of that string within a record?

Thanks!

In the Criteria, you could try:
LIKE "*" & [Enter the name...] & "*"

Adjust the text in the parameter brackets to suit.
