UPDATING CELLS... for up to 45 mins - message in Excel workbook with PowerPivot Data Model

Hi,

I have a model created with PowerPivot which has been running fine. In the last couple of weeks though, when the model refreshes/recalculates it has started to go into UPDATING CELLS... mode (shows at bottom right in Excel workbook) for up to 45 minutes, during which time it is unresponsive. Sometimes this happens when changing a formula in the data model itself, and sometimes just when the model goes into one of its periodic processing data/reading data.

I have tried many potential solutions, including deleting pivot tables and calculated measures in the model, but this issue is still occuring. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this has started to happen?

Cheers

David

Excel Facts

Move date out one month or year
Use =EDATE(A2,1) for one month later. Use EDATE(A2,12) for one year later.
Super hard to know without really digging into it. Since your data refreshed, ... many things "can" happen. Maybe it simply has WAY more rows to display in the pivot table, and that slowed things down. Maybe based on a change in data... the engine decided to run the queries a bit different, and chose poorly. Maybe you secretly changed your model and didn't tell us, and you broke it. Maybe it is actually "corrupted" and needs to be totally rebuilt. Maybe your machine is calculating Pi to 2358953 digits? :)
