Update Cell Reference within a shape

I am currently using rectangles within a single cell so I can have three difference colors in one cell (so let me know if there is an easier way to accomplish that).

Each rectangle references a cell (A1, B1, C1) and fills up D1. When I copy cell D1 (which also selects the shapes) and paste it in D2, I would like the references to be updated (A2, B2, C2), but they come out referencing the original cells.

Is there a way for this not to happen, or a quick macro to fix the references? when I record macro of the update, it isn't much help.
