I haven't seen an answer to this, but if its been already posted, just point me in the direction...

I have a macro-enabled 2007 excel spreadsheet that includes both charts as objects in sheets as well as charts as separate sheets (the only macro in the workbook has nothing to do with charts). All the charts were created in Excel 2007, although the original data set was created in 2003. Some are based off data in tables, and some are PivotCharts.

Recently, all the chart objects disappeared, and the charts on their own sheets became "locked." I'm unable to create new charts, as the Charts section on Insert tab is grayed out (Illustrations are also grayed out).

When I attempt to create a new PivotChart, I get the error message "The default chart type cannot be applied to the selected data." Unfortunately, clicking on the PivotChart button in PivotTable Tools does nothing.

I have tried to open the file on another computer, but the same thing occurs. Saving it as a macro-free workbook also does not work. Charts do not reappear when saved as a web page. Saving it back into 2003 is not an option, as there would be a "significant loss of functionality."

Does anybody have a solution to my quagmire?

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
I actually got the answer from an MVP (thanks to Bill Manville) over at Microsoft's support forum. The first suggestion below fixed it. I'm posting it here just in case someone else runs into the issue...

Not seeing chartobjects, and greyed out Insert > Chart buttons could both be fixed by
Office Button > Excel Options > Advanced > Display > Display options for this workbook: For objects, show: All

Other possible causes of Greyed out Insert > Charts buttons could be
because the worksheet is protected [Review > Changes > Unprotect Sheet]
or because you have selected multiple sheets (you will see [Group] in the title bar) [Right-click a sheet tab > Ungroup sheets]
or because you have shared the workbook (you will see [Shared] in the title bar) [Review > Changes > Share Workbook> Editing: uncheck the checkbox]
