Unable to open workbooks after declining auto-recover

Hi

I opened up my laptop today and the usual 'auto-recover' message was displayed saying something had gone wrong and asked me to check the files.

I decided that as I had not made any recent changes that i would just click 'close'.

I then went to the file directly and opened it and it is showing blank. This is the same for the other workbooks that came up when the auto-recover message was displayed.

These are important workbooks and i really need this data back.

Advice appreciated.

Thanks

Excel Facts

Remove leading & trailing spaces
Save as CSV to remove all leading and trailing spaces. It is faster than using TRIM().
Update to this... it seems to be a problem with excel... when i try to open excel it says " The operating system is not presently configured to tun this application".
I havent made any changes recently. MS Word is working fine.
I might try a system restore.

I have tried restore and it is saying "no file history was found" and then on the "file history" section it says "file history is off", and "No usable drive was found"///
however once a month i create a system restore point!

Latest on this is that i re-entered my MS Office key.
I can now access my xls files if i first open excel and then "open from file".
However, if i click on the xls workbook in the folder then it opens up a blank workbook (in fact it isnt even blank as there arent any rows or columns).

Help appreciated.
