turn off filter?

Well, I was able to create a button where I search for part of a last name using this query ...Like "*" & [Enter all or part of the persons LAST name] & "*"

It works great. It brings up a sub form with the results in a scrollable view.
But I want it to populate the main form. I did figure this out by using an open for button that directs me back to the main form. Perfect! Except - the OpenForm command appears to use a filter and the only way to return to a searchable mode is to turn off the filter. Is there a better way to populate the main form and still have it scrollable with all the data - no filter?
