So in 2012 or so if I wanted to automate Excel using the newest technology, I chose VSTO. As it is now 2017, the up-to-date selection would be...?

Can Excel fill bagel flavors?
You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
what exactly are you trying to do?
(I vaguely recall the VSTO)

Update my toolkit of Office development. That is, if I'd want to study from the beginning, what is the not-out-of-date technique I should learn? I know it is not VBA anymore (Visual Studio is newer / more modern technology) and maybe it isn't VSTO either since that was like 2002-2012 the technology to use, but now we are in 2017 and the developers using the newest technology use what today?

I basically develop offline workbook automation with custom UIs (WPF) and some SQL Server database connections.
