I would like to be able to allow time limited use of some spreadsheet files I provide to some of my clients. Is there a way to let them download one of my files with, for example, a 6 month password, or a 6 month expiration of the sheet, unless I supply a renewal code?

Spell Check in Excel

Have a look at chips article here: http://www.cpearson.com/excel/workbooktimebomb.aspx

Do note the limitations Chip outlines with such an approach as a Competent user can thwart any restrictions you may put in place.

A Further Note of caution about using a time limited approach - Whilst you own copyright to your application your clients own the data they enter in to it - if you include something in your workbook that restricts it's use after a time period, your restrictions MUST allow your clients to still access THEIR data.

Thank you. Is there then a way to password protect all cells once the time limit expires. This way they can still access their data but cannot do anything further with the spreadsheet

You can apply worksheet / workbook protection but this is not secure. Refer to chips site if need further guidance.
