I have a new Lenovo i7 with 32 bit Office 2016. When I select Thisworkbook object in the VBE, Excel crashes.
Searches have not found a solution and extracting to bas or cls files fail to import to clean wkb on selecting the object.

Any solutions?

Do you hate GETPIVOTDATA?
Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
Have you tried starting Excel in Safe mode? Does it only happen with one workbook, or any?

I have tried starting in Safe Mode and it still crashes when selecting ThisWorkbook object in the VBE
even though no addins or macro files are loaded.

It occurs on all workbooks including new files.

In that case I can only suggest a full uninstall, reboot and reinstall of Office. I'd also make sure you clean out/delete any Office folders before reinstalling.

The Outcome, following the reinstall that did not change anything, is that I was being recognised as a User rather than Administrator and this restricted my access to ThisWorkbook object.

All good now. Thanks Rory for your help.

Part of the new Laptop process to "Get to know stuff that you did not want to know".

Hope this helps the next person to experience the same.

That is bizarre. I have never heard of that and don’t think it’s normal, but I’m glad you’re all sorted anyway. :)

Quite bizarre.
Lenovo i7 8thGen with Office 2016 Prof plus

Does not occur on the Toshiba or Hp machines.

Turned out to be the IT department seeking to limit the use of xlsm within the business by applying restrictive Corporate Policies.
