Testing excel vba files

I am constantly revising an excel vba program. I normally keep a workbook file, revise the vba code and then save as a new file when I make major changes. Often, I find that my new file does not contain changes I'd made in previous versions that I'd like to keep or restore. Is there a protocol or accepted procedure of integrating parts of old versions to the latest version?
