tables: how to change appearance of columns with spaces?

I copy-and-pasted contiguous rows and columns from an Excel worksheet and pasted into a reply composition window (whatever you call it: like what I'm typing into now).

But columns that contain values with spaces appear as one word per multiple lines, and the column is narrowed to the width of the longest first word.

I would like the entire contents to appear on a single line in each row, widening the column to accommodate.

How can I accomplish that?
