Jay sorry I was deleting my duplicate post whilst you were replying to it. The answer is buried away in Excel isn't it? - I'd looked at all the CHAR items and did not realise p equalled pi. My next problem. I want to have text in a standard font plus the symbol for pi in the same cell. I want to use the formula: ="A times "&CHAR(112) &"equals" but cannot format the "A times " and the "equals" bits differently from the Symbol format for pi. Is there a way round this?
You'll have to do it using the Insert Symbol from the Insert menu.
You can also do it in code. Turn on the macro recorder and do the steps. What results indicates that you will have to manipulate the text characters using the .Characters property.
Thanks Scott, skipping the CHAR approach works perfectly for what I want. It would have been helpful of Microsoft to mention the Symbol font in the help section for pi!
