Switchboard and untypeable textbox/combo

I've created my first switchboard, and while trying to add additional features, I've come to a certain roadblock.

I added a textbox, but when I run the form, I can't type into the textbox.

So I tried using a Combo box. The combo box loads the list of data, but I can't select any item in the list.

Is this a known "feature" of the switchboard or am I missing a setting somewhere to allow me to make the selection/entry I want on the switchboard form?

If you go into design view of the switchboard form, and look at the properties of the form itself, you'll see that allowedits is set to 'No'. So that's why you can't edit. If you set it to 'Yes', you can edit. However there may be a reason why it's currently set to No.
