What am I doing incorrectly here?

Name ranges include Total, SalesDate, and Payment which are all ranges of data.
SalesData is a column of legitimate dates, Total has numeric dollar amounts, Payment is the text string showing type of payment (e.g., Cash).

Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
The criteria range must be a range not an array, which is what you're using.

If those three name RANGES are something like J2:J1001...so isn't that a "range" or a misnomer?

Those are ranges, but you have put one of them inside MONTH so it becomes an array.
