SUMIF or SUMIFS but need to total a range

I want to know year to date how many Apples are sold.
SUMIF gives me 4 (being 1 + 3), but I want to see 28, being each month/column added up as well as each row.

Control+shift+enter, not just enter:

=SUM(IF($A$2:$A$7="apple",IF((1&$B$1:$E$1)+0<=TODAY()-DAY(TODAY())+1,$B$2:$E$7)))

How do you mean? By the way, Jan, etc. are month names (text), not true dates.

Probably can't think of an example right now, but this seems to work for what I need.
