Sumif earlier than today

I have tried =SUMIF(A6,"<"&TODAY(),(C6:D6)) there is a 1 in both C6 and D6 and the date in A6 is 4 days ago so the result should be 2. I don't know why it is not summing it up. Also that is not my main objective what I want is for C5 and D6 to be added if the date is in the past but I was trying to figure out the not summing problem before the cells not being adjacent for a range in the formula. Initially I tried =SUMIF(A6,"<="&TODAY(),(C5,D6)) but that resulted in #VALUE !

Any help is greatly appreciated!
