Everytime I come to crate a formula that uses a left lookup I end up looking for answers on various forums. Today, however, I cannot find the answer, so need to ask here.

I have a spreadsheet with names of Towns (Ipswich, Newmarket, etc) in Column R and a quantity figure in Column E (1,2,3,etc). All I want to do is get the total quantity for each Town. I cannot use pivot tables because the spreadsheet will eventually be shared.

If anyone can give me a method of remembering this formula I would be grateful.

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
Hi Steve

I think you are after a sumif:

For example:
=SUMIF(R:R,"Ipswich",E:E)

Note you can swap the 2nd argument "Ipswich" to a cell reference.

use the sumif function :

=sumif(R1:R200,"=city",E1:E200)

This is assuming you have 200 rows... adjust accordingly...

Hope this helps
