Suitable statistic test in categorical or ordinal data for correlation?

So I have three types of data
1) Grades
2) Attendance of beginner special classes or not
3) Attendance of higher special classes or not

Grades are letters and attendance is more like yes no. Would it better to just convert all to numbers and use basic correlation or some other test would be more suitable.. maybe chi square test?
