substitue formula

I have the formula

=LOOKUP(2,1/((mdata!$g$20:$g$11000="1d")*(mdata!$s$20:$s$11000=a2)),mdata!$d$20:$d$11000)

What if there is only one value, what alternative formula could I use for my situation.

VLOOKUP to Left?
Use =VLOOKUP(A2,CHOOSE({1,2},$Z$1:$Z$99,$Y$1:$Y$99),2,False) to lookup Y values to left of Z values.
