I have this list of names in Column Z and Values in Column AA.
I am using a formula in Column AB - =SUMIFS($AA$12:$AA$1000,$Z$12:$Z$1000,"="&LEFT(TRIM(Z12),6)) - This is my helper column.
I was then going to use another formula in the sub total rows (In Grey) to list the sub totals.

I cannot use the Excel Sub Totals feature because my data is variable.
However the formula is delivering zeros as shown below.
If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it.

Excel Facts

Is there a shortcut key for strikethrough?
Ctrl+S is used for Save. Ctrl+5 is used for Strikethrough. Why Ctrl+5? When you use hashmarks to count |||| is 4, strike through to mean 5.
Try
Excel Formula:
=SUMIFS($AA$12:$AA$1000,$Z$12:$Z$1000,LEFT(TRIM(Z12),6)&"*")
