Strange Date Formatting?

I'm daling with a spreadsheet which pulls data from a mainframe.

When the data gets to me it appears as a custom cell -

08/03/2004 12:32:42

When I change this to text it returns

38054.52271

Can anyone explain why this is happening and how I can reformat the date cell so it just hold the day/month/year in a format I can search on?

Thanks in advance,

are You in Access or Excel?
for Access go to the property sheet for the control and in the Format field select your prefered date format.

Foe Excel, right click the cell, select Format Cells... Select the numbe tab, click on Date in the list then from the right side of the dialog pick your prefered format.
