Is it possible to carry out a spell check which excludes words which have a subscript or superscript?

This would be for an Excel workbook which contains formulas, etc. such as shown below.

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.

I ran a test in my Excel (v365) using superscript and subscripts.
When I ran the spell check (F7), it didn't find any spelling issues:

However, when I added Spellling - separate from the first part with the super/subscripts, those were flagged is misspelled.

See if you have any spaces between the word and super/subscripts.

When I added a space between them, they were flagged as the super /subscripts were now on their own.

Try this in a new sheet if needed and see if you get the same restuls.
Also check to make sure they are actual super/subscripts using the Font Settings (CTRL + SHIFT + D) [Format Cells] dialog box:

Highlight just the superscript > CTRL + SHIFT + D

Hopefully this helps a little...

Thanks for looking into, I think your result is by selecting "Ignore words that contain numbers" in the Options/Proofing section.

Which is an option, but would miss words that are not supposed to have digits.

Good catch! I didn't realize that earlier.
I shouldn't be surprised that Microsoft hasn't addressed this issue... ever. Seems like it should be an available option.

I found this online just now. It specifically addressed this issue. It's related to Word, but it's a Macro solution. So it would obviously need to be tested in Excel. There's a video there as well if you want to see it in action.

Those macros definitely need to be converted to work in Excel:

The values I found having issues so far were:
  • wdFindContinue
  • wdReplaceAll
  • ActiveDocument.SpellingChecked = False

And any super/subscripts that are using letters...

I wouldn't mark this thread as resolved yet. There are some really good VBA experts in this forum that could very well find a solution for you, given a little time.
