Excel Facts

How to fill five years of quarters?
Type 1Q-2023 in a cell. Grab the fill handle and drag down or right. After 4Q-2023, Excel will jump to 1Q-2024. Dash can be any character.
The problem you have is that your data is being sorted like text because it is text

One way:

With your data in cells A1 to A3
Formula in B1 copied down
=LEFT(A1,FIND("-",A1)-1)
Formula in C1 copied down
=VALUE(MID(A1,FIND("-",A1)+1,LEN(A1)-FIND("-",A1)))

Now sort
level 1 column B
level 2 column C

Another way is to convert your data

with your data in cells A1 to A3

Formula in B1 copied down
=LEFT(A1,FIND("-",A1))&TEXT(MID(A1,FIND("-",A1)+1,LEN(A1)-FIND("-",A1)),"000")

with your example: A1:A3
in B1: =BASE(MID(A1,SEARCH("-",A1)+1,99),10,3) and drag down
select columns A and B with data
sort column B by A-Z

5020103001-1001B1: =BASE(MID(A1,SEARCH("-",A1)+1,99),10,3)

5020103001-2002

5020103001-10010
