When I put the Revenue/Expenses field into the Rows area in powerbi (the Matrix visual) as per above, I can sort it (by clicking on the "R/E" ribbon shown) so that I can put either R or E above the other.

However, when I put the Revenue/Expenses into the Columns area, how can I sort it so that I see R before E?

Do you hate GETPIVOTDATA?
Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
Create a new two column table with R and E as entries in the first column and 1 and 2 in the second column. Set the Sort By column for the first column to be the second column. Link that table to your table that has R/E in it using the first column, then use that new column in the matrix. It should automatically sort in the order you want then. If there's an easier way (fingers crossed!) I haven't found it yet.
