Hello all,

I am looking for some guidance, I am a fair user of excel, but this project that I am wanting to work on is above what I am familiar with doing and could use some assistance if possible. I would even be willing to pay someone for their time in helping with this project...

Here is what I am looking for:

I have a poker league that I run that has approx 30 players. We play 5 nights a week and play 2 games per evening. This is a points league that builds up to a final tournament every 4 months. Each game, we pay the top 5 spots, 100 for 5th, 200 for 4th, 300/3rd, 400/2nd and 500/1st. I am looking for a spreadsheet that I can build that will have each players name that I can place (hopefully with a drop down box) the place they finish in each evening and it will automatically keep track of their points.

There is a bit more to it, but is there anyone out there that would be willing to work with me to help me build the sheet I am looking for and I am sure we can come up with some sort of compensation for that persons time and effort in helping.

Thanks.

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
so how are you thinking of formating

DATE
G1 G2

and then for each player a dropdown with

100
200
300
400
500

with a running total maybe to the right
it would then also be possible to have a ranking summary for points so far

Yes, this is the general idea of what I am looking at... part I didn't mention in the first post are two things:

1) Players also have an option to 'chop' at any point once we get to the top 5...so for instance IF they chop, say 3 ways, we add up all available points for 1st-3rd (500+400+300) divide by 3 (number of spots chopping) and that is how many points those individual persons get...in that case each would receive 400...
2) We also have a 'player of the year' that awards a seperate count but ONLY awards based on results from the 1st game each evening. The points system for that are as follows: 1st/5, 2nd/4, 3rd/3,4th/2 and 5th/1...Those values have the same 'chop' value

need to get all the rules out to start with really
1) Players also have an option to 'chop' at any point once we get to the top 5
and would need to understand the meaning of some of your terms
for example
once we get to the top 5
once you get to top 5 of what ?
how is that defined

IF they chop, say 3 ways,
so i assume the chop can be many different ways .....

Are you asking for help in building , or are you expecting someone to put the whole thing together for you ?

but is there anyone out there that would be willing to work with me to help me build the sheet I am looking for
happy to help where possible here

from what you say - you need to know whos chopped for each game
Those values have the same 'chop' value
and if noone chopped ?

quite a lot of variables beginning to take place

...That would be defined as getting to the final 5 people remaining in the tournament. (although maybe 20 people played, these are the only ones that are going to get points for remaining until the final 5)

so i assume the chop can be many different ways .....

...Yes it could happen at any point after we reach the final 5...however it does not always happen.

...I would actually be open to either way, I will be up front though, I am not good at the formulas, formatting, etc. in excel :/ ... That being said, I would not be opposed to offering some money to a person that would work on it for me.

from what you say - you need to know whos chopped for each game
and if noone chopped ?

...That would be correct, some games 3 people chop, sometimes no chop at all,...it all depends on the players at the time.

so until we get to the top 5 people remaining we can make up a sheet and then perhaps at that point change sheets to manage the top 5 process

so I guess a sheet as I proposed for the 1st X games ( 5 nights 2 games per night for 4 months ) at what point do you get to top 5
months also have different numbers of weeks - so do you have a set number of weeks or games to play

once you enter the players names - how would you then enter the results - would you type the points or do you just want to enter 1,2,3,4,5 and a separate sheet keep the scores and ranking

>>Actually, sorry for the confusion. The top 5 I am referring to is for each game and each night... For instance, in the first game we have 20 people playing. The final 5 people remaining are going to receive points based on the order in which they finish (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th). If the person does not make points that particular night, we do not necessarily need to know that they even played.

>>We play each Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, 2 games per night. Our final tournament is played approx each 4 months (3 times per year)

with the chopping and stuff - I assume we can wait towards the end of the tournament and set-up a sheet to mange that TOP5 - was my assumption , when I said the top5

OK as an example see here

The only date to enter is in Cell D1 - then all the Dates and Days are worked out on the following columns by a calculation

you then enter from a dropdown , 1,2,3,4 or 5 for each players results
to clear the numbers, if required a mistake - you can select the cell or select multiple cells and right click and choose clear contents - resets back to no position and 0 points

the sheet is frozen so all the titles and players are locked as you scroll around the sheet - using freeze pains

on a separate sheet the points are worked out and recorded (called workings)

then the points so far to date are displayed in column B and a ranking calculated - and for a ranking of 1-5 (there will be duplicate ranking if equal scores) they will highlight green so you can see top 5 (or more if duplicated ) for ease of viewing

setup for 30 players

so theres a framework for starting

we could do a summary sheet of some description , even showing each game ranking - but that may get over complicated for no gain

see here

how did you get on with the sample I posted - is it a workable framework ?

Hello,

Sorry about the timeframe responding, got tied up with some festivties for the 4th!

Yes, that is a very workable framework and seems like it would be easy to work with!
