SOLVED: Excel is changing formulas to values when I edit them ... in .xlsx

I was having a maddening problem where suddenly, when editing a complex formula, Excel was replacing the formula with a value. And it was the wrong value, to boot. A fast web search revealed that others have had this problem, with no solution easily accessible. The problem was with an .xls file, not a .csv. Changing the location of the save didn't help.

I finally realized that I had accidentally extended Data Validation to the range with the formulas ... so Excel was picking a value that "looked like the formula." Changing Data Validation to Any Value enabled the edit without the substitution.

Posting this here in hopes that it saves someone else a few minutes of annoyance.
