I've added smilies to posts but a description is shown next to the actual "emoticon" - see below

javascript:emoticon('')javascript:emoticon(':devilish:')
Evil
Redface

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm currently using Firefox browser. When I use I.E I can't add emoticons at all - is that something to do with my I.E. settings?

I'm on Windows XP

It's almost as though you've copied the shortcut and pasted that.

javascript:emoticon(':x')

:x

Or exactly that. javascript:emoticon('')

Do you see that text when you're posting?

All you need to do is click on the image itself to insert the correct code into your text so that the image will be displayed when you actually post.

No copying/pasting/selecting/highlighting of the images themselves is involved.

That's better -

now I feel stupid -

Still can't make them work in IE, though......

appreciate your assistance..

The only way I could find that would affect clicking the smilies in IE was by in the security settings.

If you're at work, you probably don't have a choice in the matter. But if you are at home or are allowed to change the settings at work, something to try:

Go to Tools\Internet Options\Security Tab

Select whatever "zone" you need (I used the Internet Zone) and click "Custom Level." You should see a dialog with a bunch of options listed.

Scroll down the list until you see "Scripting." Under the sub-heading of "Active Scripting", set it to Enabled if it is not.
Then click OK until you are out of all of the dialogs, refresh the browser and try using the smilies again.

Disabling this was the only way I could find that the smilies wouldn't work. If I set it back to enabled and refreshed the page, everything was fine.

Kristy,

thanks, I could spin you a line but the fact is that I've got it working now and I haven't changed a thing!

As usual it was a problem with those troublesome "human settings"

Sorry to take up your time
