Slicer to control two tables

I have two pivot tables from two separate datasets. They use the same codes in a field in each. I can't create a relationship in PowerPivot because the codes are repeated in both tables (i want to summarize them anyway).

My question is how to create a slicer that would control both pivot tables. Do I have to create a third, "summary" table? Then is it okay to create multiple relationships to that third table?

Also, will this apply to a timeline? (in that the third table is my calendar table)

Excel Facts

Difference between two dates
Secret function! Use =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"Y")&" years"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"YM")&" months"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"MD")&" days"
You're correct, you need to make a third table that contains all of the codes from each of the two tables (no duplicates though). Then join the two tables to the third and make the slicer from the third table. The same logic applies to dates.

I've created relationships, but the slicer doesn't seem to be working. Any thoughts as to why?

(Excel 2016)

EDIT: I was making a list in both tables and didn't have any "values" in them - once i added even a simple count, THEN the slicer worked. Forgot about that.
