Hi all, aside from just whacking in another 2 columns of fill next to the data i have - to show min & max lines on my chart, does anyone know how to show user defined lines (boundaries) on a chart?

just for illustration, min = 2 max = 10 have a bunch of data average around 5 (data i actually have has a few more dec. pts.) with a few excursions, i'm using countif to tot these up but i need graphs to show these as well... any ideas?

Hi Gareth,

I don't believe there is any built-in mechanism for doing what you describe, but it is possible to define Shape objects (drawing objects like lines, rectangles, circles, etc.) and have VBA code register them on a Chart with respect to the chart axes such that they update when the data changes or when you rescale or move the chart.

Its a bit to involved to explain it here, but if you like I could send you an example.

Actually you should try playing around with the X-axis and Y-axis error bars.

You can take off the markers, extend the lines up and down (or right and left) to span the whole scale.

You can format the bars separately to give them separate colors or line styles or thickness in weight.

The series that you base the error bars can be based off of the alternate X-axis or y-axis.

Play around with this stuff enough, you can hide the series the error bar is based off of (thus you only have just the error bar) and you could display the actual series number label (even though the series isn't displayed). Thus you have a dynamic value for the error bar that changes when the underlying series changes.

Sorry if this sounded a little convoluted.

Hi Damon

I would be grateful if you could send me the example you offered to Gareth, moving shapes around on a chart.

I have done this but run into difficulties when the chart is reselected and therefore the shapes need to move. At present I get an error message.

Cheers Boxer
